Life Fitness Mileage Club

40 Mile Treadmill Run

The Wellness Director from the City of Hartford contacted Life Fitness asking how to activate the marathon mode in their treadmill diagnostics.

One of their members, for her 40th birthday, was attempting to run 40 miles on a Life Fitness Integrity treadmill. Here is a note from the runner herself:

"My run was fantastic, and I finished in 7 hours and 28 minutes.  I raised approximately $400 for our local food pantry, and the food donations overflowed my suburban.

The Life Fitness treadmill is my favorite one to run on of those available at the rec center.  I like the feel of the belt, and the accessibility of the storage spaces.  I ran over 2000 miles last year, primarily on Life Fitness machine.  It's good stuff.

I've already chosen my next ultra adventure, and will be running the Kettle Moraine 100k in June.  I'll be spending the colder months training indoors, so I'll continue putting Life Fitness machine to good use.

I've attached two pictures from my run.  One is of the "Reserved" sign Terri posted on the treadmill to ensure its availability at start time.  It's a never to be repeated sight in a public facility.  The other picture is of me during the run."

Running Into the Ground

This is my third Life Fitness treadmill. My then girlfriend (now wife!) purchased the first, and I learned that running on a treadmill was better for my knees and allowed me to run every day of the year no matter the weather. Since then, I've run over 18,000 miles! We replaced the second treadmill with the T7-0, and that one was special because I trained for my first marathon on it -- Boston 2013. I've run so much on this treadmill that I actually broke the frame. Fortunately, it should be covered by the lifetime warranty, and I'm now waiting for a replacement. It's been a month since my last run -- a lifetime for me -- but once Life Fitness comes through on their lifetime warranty promise, I'll start my training for Boston 2014. (PS: Our X9i elliptical has nearly 9,000 miles on it ... but I'll save that story for another day!)

Just Get It Done...

Sometime in the early 80’s, I took an interest in distance running which continued into college where I met my wife. Together, we enjoyed eating macaroni and cheese and watching Magnum P.I. reruns. Unfortunately, it was the beginning of an unhealthy trend. I also developed a taste for video games and movies, and fitness got pushed aside.

In time we had children and each time we had a new addition to our family, I’d make a new plan to get in shape. It always ended the same -- a big flashy effort followed by slipping back into old habits. As the children grew older, I increasingly identified with overweight people and figured that was my lot in life to be unhealthy and unhappy. My children would just have to accept the fact that their dad was a really big guy and we’d try to pretend it didn’t matter. I realized that by my lack of physical activity and media habits (TV, movies and video games) I was being a terrible example for my children and no matter how much I tried to tell them what they should do, I was teaching a much stronger lesson by my actions. They were learning from my example and it was beginning to show in their own habits and bodies. My burden of guilt was becoming greater -- as was my shame. We had seven children, and I was being a poor father, husband and leader for my family.

In 2008, we learned that we were going to be blessed with another beautiful addition to our family but that joy was soon crushed when we got word that our little girl would have Down’s Syndrome. We’ve got a lot of love in our family and we’re close but that would take strength and energy I was afraid I didn’t have. What could we do but embrace the future with our little girl and press on? I was haunted by one big question. How can I take care of my children if I can’t take care of myself, and live long enough, to be there when they need me? I shopped for the best treadmill for the money and bought a Life Fitness F3 Treadmill so I could exercise through Minnesota winters and bad weather. I dropped 40 pounds but gradually put it back on over discouragement, stress and inconsistent dieting.

In October of 2012, I went to the doctor and weighed in at 329 pounds. I was diagnosed with Non Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD), high cholesterol, “pre-diabetic” blood sugar levels and had a short list of other chronic ailments including sleep apnea. I was in bad shape physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. I began a diet high in fruits and vegetables and started using my F3 Treadmill six days a week.

It’s been almost a year, and I have lost about 130 pounds. My blood sugar and cholesterol are perfectly normal, and the chronic ailments are almost non-existent. I haven’t been scanned yet but was told by the doctor the NAFLD isn't a concern any more. I don’t have sleep apnea or need a c-pap machine anymore. People say I look like a different person. I feel like it. My waist has gone down from 56 to 34 inches. I even have a lap for my kids to sit on! We don’t have a big mirror at home so it’s shocking to walk into a store and see my reflection in the windows. I’m thin -- like I was almost 25 years ago! My outlook and attitude are vastly improved! I’ve begun a journey that I believe will continue for the rest of my life. I’m sure there is much I have yet to learn but so far, here’s what I’ve come up with:

1. You can’t get in shape for anybody but yourself. Doing it for anyone else is just stress and pressure. You have to be ready to face your own challenge from within.
2. It takes a balance of diet AND exercise -- not just one or the other.
3. Small and faithful is better than giant efforts once in a while. You can start small and grow from there -- while creating good habits. I started on my F3 walking 2-3 miles/day. Now I run 6 days a week averaging 12 miles per workout. Excessive? Hard on the knees? I couldn’t do it without the treadmill. The shock absorbing deck makes all the difference. I ran my first 6 minute mile yesterday (compared to an 18 minute mile when I started).
4. Lift weights -- it builds muscle and more muscle burns more calories.
5. Eat whole, unprocessed foods as often as possible.
6. Drink lots of water -- just plain water. It will keep you hydrated and clean inside. It’s not meant to be a tasty treat, just do it anyway.
7. If you fail or have a setback, so what? Just start again. Don’t let it be an excuse to quit. You're not a failure. You're not a machine. You're human.
8. Set reachable goals so you don’t get discouraged.
9. Enjoy life! It’s too short to stress about every thing that goes wrong. Having a “normal” life is an illusion. Things go wrong every day - that’s normal. Besides, stress promotes weight gain.
10. Fitness is a matter of choice. It takes time but It will happen if you choose to make it happen!

"Oh, Sorry...I think I Picked Up the Wrong Chart."

My inspiring story is that I achieved what I call "Oh-Sorry-I-Picked-Up-The-Wrong-Chart" weight loss. Let me explain. Between February 2012 and September 2013, I lost over 80 lbs by eating better and working out on my Life Fitness equipment. In October I went in for my first "annual" physical in a few years. The nurse asked me to step onto the scale.  She looked at my chart and set the balance weights for well over 200 lbs. No luck. She kept repositioning the weights lower and lower. Then she said in a perplexed tone, "Oh, sorry, I must have picked up the wrong chart." So that is what I call my weight loss. No great adversity overcome, I will admit. But perhaps there is something to take away from my journey. When I started losing weight, there was no major inspiration for me. No impending nuptials. No class reunion. No serious illness to overcome. That first week was like every other of the 100s of weeks I told myself I need to lose weight and maintain a better exercise regime. But for some reason I still cannot fathom, it worked. So perhaps people can take the following inspiration from my story: If at first you do not succeed, DEFINITELY try again.

Back in the Saddle and Then Some.

I have always loved watching movies on TV. Unfortunately, sitting in a chair was beginning to have its effect in terms of weight gain, etc. I have tried a couple of other stationary bikes but the biggest problem was the noise. I had to turn the TV up so loud that people in other parts of the house were being blasted out. I finally tried the R1 Recumbent, and it was unbelievably quiet. So much so my wife once came downstairs to see if I was okay because usually she could hear the bike and the TV. Well, my weight is down, blood pressure down, and the volume on the TV can now be turned down.

Time Constraints

In 2007 my wife gave birth to our 1st child (son Ryan) and that coincided with my retirement 6 months later from active duty with the Army. Our decision was for her to continue her career while I became a stay at home dad, and worked on my Master's Degree in the evening.

As such, time to go to the gym on base was severely limited. Thus our decision to purchase a Life Fitness Elliptical Cross-Trainer. The results were fantastic. I could get in a 45+ minute workout right at home when my son went down for a nap, or first thing in the morning, as well as late at night. The benefits have been tremendous, staying fit, increasing my energy and generally feeling good about myself while maximizing my family time. My wife also enjoys the elliptical as well.

In December 2011, my wife gave birth to twin girls and that has only increased the importance of having an "in house" fitness area to work out in. In 2010 we added weights and a bench for strength conditioning and this week we are about to purchase the Life Fitness C1 Upright Lifecycle Exercise Bike...so that we can even get in a cardio workout after the kids have (almost) worn us out!

Still At It

I have alway tried to make time for excercise, no matter how busy life was. Now that I am a father to 2 young children, finding time for excercise has become increasingly difficult. It's not just a matter of setting aside the time, but also finding the energy to crawl out of bed at the crack of dawn to get a workout in before anyone wakes up. While this can certainly be challenging, I wouldn't have it any other way, as excerise is a fundamental and essential part of my life. I plan to keep at it full steam and can't wait until my kids can join me on the treadmill and elliptical! R.

Cheaper at Home

Was working out at a club and with a new family it was easier to work out at home then the club.

So back in 2001, I purchased a Life Fitness 3Xi on the way to my parents before Thanksgiving dinner.

Still love it today.

Still Going Strong

I don't think there has been a week that has gone by that I haven't used my treadmill (unless I was out of town or sick!). My husband gave it to me as a gift in 1997, and I've never had any problems with it or had it serviced -- pretty impressive! I like the option of walking or running in my basement if the weather is inclement, or I just don't want to take the time and effort of going to the health club. We also have a Life Fitness bike which is even older and still going strong! Thank you, Life Fitness, for your quality equipment!

Addicted to My X9i

My fitness journey began in March of 2006. At the time I weighed 230 pounds. I lacked energy, and was really beginning to feel the effects of carrying around all the extra tonnage. After making a decision to loose some weight, I decided to purchase a quality piece of exercise equipment: the Life Fitness X9i Cross-Trainer.

It took a couple of years, but I was able to shed 50 pounds---and keep it off! I now run 35 minutes a day, six or seven times a week. My X9i and a healthy diet keep me feeling great.

Stress Release

Have always been very active, and exercising is a huge stress relief for me. Unfortunately, knee problems have prevented me from running for the past 5 years. This Life Fitness bike has helped keep me sane (on a relative basis, at least).

Early Morning Gets the Blood Flowing!

For me, a cardio work out is the way that I get the blood flowing. Hopping on my elliptical or my Life Fitness bike, even when I'm bleary-eyed and dragging, always yields benefits throughout the rest of the day---I'm more alert, energized. Plus, I can partake of the great joy of eating more of what I really want to eat (as opposed to only eating what I SHOULD eat). Working out is part of the balanced lifestyle that I strike to achieve.

Keeps Me on Track

Owning a treadmill and elliptical in our home has been the reason that I am able to be consistent with exercise. I don't have time to go to the gym to work out but can always balance my schedule to make time in my home. Over the last few years I have exercised in the morning, late evening and times in between according to what else was going on in my life. The Life Fitness elliptical has served me well as it has required no special maintenance to keep it running smoothly. Great investment, highly recommend the product and don't know what I would do without it.

Elliptical Changed My Life

Using the Life Fitness X1 has changed my life. I've lost 10 pounds - and kept it off - by making the X1 the main component of my workout regimen. I also lift weights and do some running, but the 2000 miles I've put on the X1 in the last 22 months have been the focal point. It makes it easier to work out in the cold Chicago winters. I'm looking forward to the next 2000 miles on the X1.

Right Weight and Energetic

The Lifecycle has become a regular part of my life.
In the past I could easily talk myself out of going to the gym. With the Life Fitness Elliptical X7 at home I can easily get some, easy on the knees, weight bearing exercise. I mix it up with a bit of free weights and mat work. This has helped me maintain my weight and strength. I love that it is actually improving my arm strength. At one point it seemed like there was nothing I could do to keep from gaining weight. Now after dropping 55 pounds, I am maintaining a good weight and feeling energetic. This is especially great during the winter months. I just crank up the music or watch a prerecorded program on TV. Retired and in my 60’s I do not want to slow down. When the weather permits, I am biking the local rolling hills or taking a hike.

Easy on Knees

My wife and I have exercised all of our adult lives, but gave up running when we turned 50 due to wear and tear on our knees, feet, etc. We had an old exercise bike and cross country ski-type machine but needed something we both would enjoy and thus use. The Life Fitness Elliptical Cross Trainer has been everything we hoped for and more. We have a high quality home theater system in place and the combination makes us look forward to our exercise sessions. We've put over 3800 miles on the elliptical in less than 4 years, so obviously we like it. When our children and spouses visit they all use it too. It is honestly one of the best purchases we have ever made. Best of all it is easy on our knees!

Future Grandpa

In December of 2011, I found myself being terribly out of shape. At that time I was weighing in at 340lbs. I wasn't sleeping well, I was snoring very heavily and I would get out of breath very quickly. So, one day in December 2011 after having a long talk with my then 17 year old son, who by the way thinks his Mother and I will live forever, I decided that me being around for sometime would require for some lifestyle changes. So, I decided to order a Life Fitness bike. It's now Thanksgiving day 2012 and I'm down to 265lbs. I have rode my bike 1744 miles since receiving it back in January 2012. I'm healthier, I'm sleeping better and looking forward to 1 day being a Grandpa to my future grandchild.

Maintain a Healthy Lifestyle!

We bought the Life Fitness X9i because as we were getting older the impact of the treadmill was hard on our joints. The very low impact of the X9i allows us to continue to maintain a healthy cardio-vascular lifestyle while also limiting the impact on our joints. Nothing better than 30 minutes on the elliptical and then 15 minutes in the hot tub even in the middle of winter. Having the equipment in the home, gives us the flexibility to use it any time day or night which also guarantees more usage and better weight control and a healthy heart.

Staying in Shape

I purchased my Life Fitness exercise bicycle to suplement my outdoor bicycle riding during the cooler weather months when the sun rises late.
I have been an avid road bicycler since the late 1970's and over the years have used different types of indoor trainers. None have worked and held my interest over the long period to my satisfaction. During the summer of 2009 my spouse and I stayed in hotel in London that had a lifecycle bicycle similar to the one I purchased. I found that indoor trainer to provide a good workout with flexibility based on the parameters that I set. Since purchasing the bicycle in the fall of 2009 I have continued to be happy with the exercise results achieved.
I am 68 years old and continue to enjoy the daily workout and the challenges I set for myself each day when I ride inside.

My Life Fitness Elliptical Story

I had used Life Fitness products at the local gym for over 10 years. I purchased an X5 elliptical for home use several years ago.
Maintaining health is the major motivation to use the elliptical. I have been using it at least 2 or 3 times per week since I have had it. Exercise is an important part of my life. I never knew so many miles had been accumulated on the machine until this promotion prompted me to look up the miles. I think going over 5000 miles is quite an accomplishment. The machine has worked without needing any repairs throughout this period. I hope to get many more years and miles of service from the machine. One of the best purchases I have made. I know it was a good investment in maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
